Public Relations Tips For The Modern Rock, Alternative, and Metal Artist
In this day and age, the average rock band is running to catch up with the advancements in online marketing and the ease of connecting with people from across the planet. In just the past 3 or 4 years musicians have seen community websites such as MySpace come and go as result generators and sites such as Facebook and Reverbnation secure themselves as a way to market an effective PR campaign.
In the good ol’ days a band had to build their popularity regionally by means of passing out fliers or a multitude of other manual labor type of methods. As technology advances bands and musicians turn to their computers to gain more national exposure and introduce themselves into key markets that otherwise would be impossible.
As I briefly discuss a few of these easy simple ways to improve your online presence, keep in mine that a strong PR campaign is intended to build your reputation and is not always geared to selling tickets to an upcoming concert or pushing your merch…Sometimes the idea is just to get someone talking.
PRESS RELEASE!!!!
There are several free press release providers online…Press releases are a great way to simply release your information and let it drift from website to website that used there companies for portions of their content.
Major management firms use the press release as a tool to focus peoples attention on what is happening with the artist now and even if you have to do it on a smaller scale, you WILL see an improvement on your exposure area.
Learn To Write An Effective Email
When you book a gig, search for management, submit your material to radio or labels, and even thank a fan for their support you need to look like you are in control of the situation. Email is the #1 way most businesses (and yes a band is a business) do their daily communication or negotiations so wouldn’t it just make since that you master this art.
First of all, get straight to the point in the message. Introduce yourself, who you play with and what you want from them in the very first sentence. These people skim so they don’t want a history at this point.
In the next sentence state what you can offer them. If the only thing you can think of is you have great songs the conversation is over so sell yourself….i.e. we have traveled the country, we have performed at this venue, we have sold this many albums, etc….
In the final sentence of your now professional email simply thank them for their time and you await their response. Perfect this format and I promise you will improve your personal and business relationships which leads to more profitable opportunities.
